Philippians 2:5-7 ESV Two Perspective from to view Humility: 1. Our position relative to God (Positional Humility) 2. How we are to relate to others (Relational Humility) When it comes to position Paul had perhaps the greatest claim under the law God had given his people: 4 …though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. Philippians 3:4-6 ESV Job had the very best endorsement anyone could receive from God: 8 And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” Job 1:8 ESV Yet Paul acknowledges his position when he writes: 7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss… Philippians 3:7-8 ESV God’s answer to Job in Chapter 38 is quite clear as to whom is the Creator and whom is the created. Anything we might take pride in is a blessing from God. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17 ESV By his perfect example Jesus shows positional and relational humility. What we are called to emulate as his followers. Paul’s letters call followers to relational humility many times over. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Romans 12:16 ESV 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:18-21 ESV 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:3-4 ESV 8 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 9 Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. 1 Peter 3:8-9 ESV To have relational humility is to participate in “One Anothering” 12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Colossians 3:12-13 ESV True humility is being willing to give up everything that comes from myself in order to be obedient to God, and do His will.
