Gate City Message Notes One Another - Week 1 Not You but You Joshua Robinson It’s not about YOU “I have been crucified with Christ and it’s no longer I who live.” Gal. 2:20 You (singular) σύ. σοῦ, σου, σοί, σοι, σέ, σε - su/sou 1000 uses You (plural) ὑμᾶς ὑμῖν, ὑμῶν, ὑμεῖς - humeis/humas 2200 uses I cant read the BIBLE and make it about ME Sermon on the Mount anger - singular lust - singular divorce - singular lover your enemies - plural! beatitudes - plural light of the world - plural salt of the earth - plural ask and it shall be given - plural Other plural examples: “you must be born again” John 3:7 “you are the temple of the Holy Spirit” 1 Cor. 3:16-17; 6:19 “he (spirit) will guide you into all truth.” John 16:13 “behold I am with you always” Matthew 28:20 “whatever you ask in my name you will receive” Matt. 21:22 “If you abide in me and my words in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you” John 15:7 Life isn’t about ME Just like sin must die our individualistic and self-centered mindset must go with it. You (singular) are now part of a much bigger (y’all) It is about YOU (Y’all) “This is my commandment that you love ONE ANOTHER as I have loved you.” John 15:12 One Another - ἀλλήλους (allelon) one another, each other, mutually reciprocally Over 100 uses You belong to a “we, us, one-another” and that will not change Myth I can love God but not the church I love you Jesus but hate your bride I love my elbow but hate the rest of me We join God’s family on His terms and conditions: • God did all the work, your merit doesn’t matter • God called you to follow • You give up your life • It’s no longer about you it’s about God. • People matter most to God. • God made us family and commands us to “one another” (love, serve, sacrifice, forgive, encourage, build up, pray for, etc.) • So we can share the Good News with ALL people One Another matters to God so it should matter to ME I need other people in my life because God tells me I do I have been saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ I have been crucified with Christ and it’s no longer I who live but Christ in me I am a new creation, with a new heart, new life, new purpose AND I am a part of His FAMILY No longer I but now “we/us” Join us as we discover what it is to live out God’s call to “one another”
